Synchronizing Data

By default, Business Time Tracker records data into a local SQLite database available on the end-user machine only.

Users may choose a way to deliver the data into the corporate database using the options dialog box:

  1. Using the corporate database instead of the personal SQLite database.
  2. Using the personal database and synchronizing low-level data with the corporate database.
  3. Using the personal database and synchronizing high-level data with the corporate database.

In the first case, the tracker records the data into the corporate database directly.

So, users and company stuff have full data in one place.

In the second case, the tracker records data into the local database and synchronize all data into the corporate database.

This case is similar for the previous one, but targets on mobile users.

Users may easily switch between them using the options dialog box.

The big minus of these modes is privacy.

The tracker records all titles and URLs.
So, authorized managers and database administrators may see all opened documents, Outlook message titles, and visited websites.

The tracker does not track content, keywords, and other private data.
Also, opened documents and URLs can be tracked by other corporate software.
So, Business Time Tracker is not alone.

Also, the users may stop the tracker anytime for private activity.

However, a company may choose the third way to get times and costs across the company.

In this case, the tracker synchronize only the aggregated data that include:

  • Date
  • Tracker
  • Process
  • Category
  • Project
  • Client
  • Time

The aggregated data also include attributes identified by every tracker:

  • Organizational unit
  • Business role
  • Hourly rate

Business Time Tracker does not synchronize the source records that additionally include:

  • Time
  • Title
  • Solution
  • Folder
  • Filename
  • URL

The big disadvantage of this method is binding the activity to categories, projects, and clients on the user side.

If a user does nothing, the company reports have objective data for processes only.

However, managers may require to bind a specific set of categories, projects, and clients.

So, step-by-step, the company will have precise data on every important activity, project, and client.
